The Larynx (Voicebox)
Anatomy
The voice box (larynx) is situated in the lower throat, connecting it to the
top of the windpipe (trachea). Primary structures include the vocal cords and
epiglottis (protective lid for the windpipe)
Functions
Major functions include voice production, prevention of aspiration (where liquids
or foods may travel down the windpipe) and the cough reflex (to clear substances
from the lungs or windpipe)
Voice
Voice production is a complicated function. It begins with respiration (breathing),
and exhaling. Air is then pushed through the closed vocal cords via the windpipe
(trachea). This causes vibration, which may be repeated hundreds or even thousands
of times per second, producing a sound. The sound is then manipulated in the
upper throat and oral cavity (including the lips, tongue, palate, and jaw) to
create speech.
Videostroboscopy is a procedure which may be used to assess the anatomy of the larynx and vocal function in detail.
